Alvaro Morata got his first taste of Chelsea action on Tuesday, as he and his new team-mates fell to a 3-2 International Champions Cup defeat to Bayern Munich in Singapore.
Chelsea’s record £58million signing came on after 63 minutes with his side trailing 3-1 and won the corner that led to Michy Batshuayi’s late goal that halved the deficit.
Morata was then involved in the goal again as he unsettled Manuel Wintzheimer at the near post, which resulted in the Bayern forward only flicking Fabregas’s cross straight into Batshuayi’s path.
Overall though it was a disappointing night for Antonio Conte, who saw his side torn to shreds in a first-half demolition job that saw Bayern 3-0 up after 27 minutes.
First right-back Rafinha cantered forward and arrowed a low strike from 25 yards into the bottom corner with just six minutes gone.
Thomas Muller then volleyed home a second six minutes later, before burying a brilliant 30-yard strike to make it 3-0 as Chelsea’s defenders backed off.
Bayern’s intensity dropped, and Marcos Alonso pulled one back for Chelsea on the stroke of half-time. Batshuayi then made it 3-2 in the 86th minute to set up a frantic finish, but Bayern – for whom Franck Ribery was outstanding – held on for the win.
Chelsea play their final friendly in Asia on Saturday against Inter, before returning to the UK for the Community Shield against Arsenal on August 6.
