Food Addiction can simply be regarded as being addicted to eating in the same way drug addicts are addicted to using drugs. This is because eating food especially sugary foods, often fire up the same regions of the brain as narcotics use does.
1. Cravings Despite Being Full
While having cravings for food is not uncommon, having it often even after eating a fulfilling nutritious meal can indicate some serious problems. This craving often comes as a result of your brain wanting something that causes the release of dopamine into your brain’s reward system.
2. Eating Much More Than You Intended to
Indulging in a little bit of food or dessert isn’t always a problem or sign of food addiction. Eating more than is healthy for you or than you intended to is. Most food addicts have difficulty eating the foods they crave in moderation.
3. Eating Until You’re “Stuffed”
When food addicts give into cravings, they often have difficulty stopping until they are satisfied. And a lot of times, the urge is n satisfied until they are stuffed or uncomfortably full. This can be equated to binge eating.
4. Feel Guilty After Excessive Eating
Another symbol of food addiction is feeling guilty after falling to cravings or eating excessively. This occurs most in people who are already overweight. You might feel weak, undisciplined, have a guilty conscience etc. Most food addicts however usually still repeat the same pattern over again.
5. Making up Excuses in Your Head
Food addicts often make up excuses to explain away the fact that they ate something when they didn’t want to. Their decision to abstain from a particular food might get challenged by the craving they are battling at the moment.
6. Inability To Set Rules
Food addicts often try setting rules to stop them from constantly falling into their addiction. A lot of them however find it extremely difficult to follow these rules and often end up falling to the addiction.
