Heartbreaking! Stubborn Injury Forces Andy Murray To Pull Out Of US Open

World No. 2 Andy Murray joined the exodus of big names absent from this year’s US Open, withdrawing from the tournament due to the hip injury that has bothered him since before Wimbledon. Andy has not played since Wimbledon, when he was hampered by the injury as he lost to Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals.

“It’s too sore for me to win the tournament and ultimately that’s what I was here to try and do,” said the Scot. It is the first time since the French Open in 2013 that Murray has withdrawn from a Grand Slam tournament.

Murray, who won the 2012 U.S. Open, joined Novak Djokovic (elbow), Stan Wawrinka (knee) and Milos Raonic (wrist) on a list of top men’s players who have dropped out of the Open, which begins Monday. On the women’s side, Serena Williams will not play because of her pregnancy, and Victoria Azarenka withdrew because of a child custody dispute.
