Team Nigeria have ended their campaign at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London without winning a medal after they finished fifth in the women’s 4x400m on Sunday. The Nigerian quartet of Patience Okon-George, Abike Egbeniyi, Glory Nathaniel and Yinka Ajayi finished behind the USA, Great Britain, Poland and France. The quartet ran the race in 3:26.72. The team ran a season’s best of 3:25.40secs to qualify for the final but could not replicate it, as the USA won the race in 3:19.02. Great Britain finished in 3:32.00 and Poland finished in 3:25.41.
Former Nigeria sprint hurdler Glory Alozie expresses dismay at Nigerian’s performances at the IAAF World Championships. “The Athletic Federation of Nigeria should go back to our former way, how we all started: School sports, under-15, 20 etc, national camps. only a return to school sports is the way to reclaiming Nigeria’s lost glory in athletics. I’m 100% sure that the Nigerian talents didn’t end with our set, we have a bunch of talents, she said”.
Alozie won silver for Nigeria in the 100 metre hurdles event at the 1999 World Athletics Championshup in Sevilla, Spain and still holds the African record and Commonwealth record in the event. She also won silver in the 60m hurdle at the 1999 World Indoor Championship in Maebashi, Japan but changed nationality and represented Spain from 2001, who she also won medals for.
