The Nigerian army has defended its invasion of a United Nations building in Maiduguri, Borno State on Friday, insisting that it was part of its counter-insurgency measures. The UN has accused the army of invading the building, which is used as its humanitarian base, without authorization.
A statement by UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Edward Kallon, revealed that the search could be extremely detrimental to the work the organisation is doing in the state. Kallon then called on the Nigerian government to provide clarification on why the building was invaded. However, the army defended its action claiming that the search conducted was part of its counter-insurgency operation in the north east. In a statement signed by 7th Division spokesperson, Kingsley Samuel, the army said it had been conducting cordon and search operations in urban and rural areas within the state. According to the Army, the clearance operations have been yielding successes, the Punch reports.
