Reasons Why Sleeping Gets Worse With Age

    reasons-why-sleeping-gets-worse-with-age

It should be noted that older people tend to sleep less and according to doctors, aging makes it harder to get the restorative sleep that is essential for the health.

It has been reported that as we get older, the part of the brain that regulates sleep starts to wear away and there might be a link between diseases we become prone to with age.

Matthew Walkerm PHD who leads the Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory at the University of California Berkeley in a review press release said that, “Every one of the major diseases that are killing us in first-world nations, from diabetics to obesity to Alzheimer’s to cancer-have strong casual links to a lack of sleep.”

He also added that our likelihood of developing these diseases increases with age. To him, “Sleep decline is one of the most dramatic psychological changes that occurs as we age, yet that demonstrable change is not part of the health conversation today.”

It has been emphasized that individuals experience sleep loss at different rates, Women experience less deterioration of deep non-REM than men.

They don’t often notice the change, but the deterioration of deep sleep usually starts early, sometimes as early as in the thirties. When this happens, the brain of the adults may be accustomed to sleep deprived, so they may not report sleeplessness to their doctors.

The best suggestion the review authors on this matter have is for individuals to cultivate a healthy sleep hygiene which would include setting a consistent hygiene such as limiting sleep disruptions such as alcohol and avoiding caffeine in the afternoon. In total, they should aim for about 8 hours of sleep at night, unless they have a genetic mutation.
